Make sure you ask everyone but your actual clients for feedback on your marketing efforts, be sure to include people that dont understand your business or your clients. Instead of testing, testing and testing again, just guess what your clients will respond to in your advertising and promotions. Conjecture is the best way to launch a new idea. Instead of querying a good cross section of your clients, save time and only ask one client what she/he thinks about your marketing efforts and go with what they say. Take the measure once and cut five times approach. If youre not sure an advertisement or new brochure will work, and you havent tested it first, dont worry about it just hire an artist to quickly put it together and just see if it works.
Okay, I know thats a lot of sarcasm, but youd be amazed at how often companies run their business like this like a butterfly in the wind. If you run your business this way dont feel badly, youve got company, most business owners do the same. Ive found that most business owners like to ask virtually everyone they know about their marketing, advertising or design theyll ask their friends, family, colleagues, other graphic designers, and in some rare cases even the family pet. Or owners just plain guess on what will work best, they figure they know their customers better than the customers know themselves big mistake. In the end, many business owners neglect the one group that matters more than any other their clients. Yes, the people that actually buy from the business, the very lifeblood of the business are often ignored. If you run a small business, do you do this as well? Always, always, always ask your ideal clients (your best ones) what they think about your marketing projects before you invest money on them. Successful owners know they have to avoid guessing and they steer clear of asking the family gerbil. The key is to ask the very people that buy from you your customers. Even if they tell you they dont like it, getting negative customer feedback will most likely saved yourself a considerable amount of money that you might have otherwise thrown away on a hunch. Seek after customer feedback as if it were gold, because in truth it is. A business owner that doesnt having a finger on the pulse of her/his clients is like a ship without a rudder. You should know EVERYTHING you can about your ideal client Stop guessing what your customers think and want, it cripples your sales and bottom line. Most businesses guess you dont want to be in that group. Loyalty Cards Systems - Beware, Some Should Be Avoided

By Jeff Walters Recently, I discussed a loyalty card system with a vendor who was selling quite a number of his systems to restaurants. I was shocked to discover the lack of detailed information that this vendor catered for, and the opportunities the system he provided squandered. The way their scheme works is that whenever a restaurant customer is presented with a bill, they provide their loyalty card to the waiter, who swipes it at the till. If the customer has accumulated sufficient points from previously purchased meals, he/she is awarded a rebate on the price of the meal. This is simple price discounting based on repeat purchases. No other marketing activities are carried out - either by the loyalty card company, or by the restaurant - to proactively influence the number of times the card holder frequents the restaurant - they rely solely on the meal discount to attract customers back for more meals. This is a system that is woefully underexploited. I asked about the level of detail that was transmitted to the card site - and was once again disappointed - only the total meal cost was transmitted. The customer profile that was being created was extremely superficial. My view was further confirmed when I asked whether the ’significant other’, or other family members’ details were collected. Once again, no. The key things wrong with this service offering:
Lack of transaction details. These days, with broadband communication and high volume data disks, there is really no excuse not to collect data at transaction level. The simple act of recording the bill at individual meal item level opens up a wealth of information:
Number of main meals - if there are children in the family unit (provided during signup), analysis of the bill will provide a clear indication of whether the whole family always eats out, or if on occaision the parents treat themselves to a quiet night on their own - possibly anniversaries, or birthdays, or just a regular night away from the kids. Types of meals - red meat, fish, vegetarian - which could be used for special promotions Beer, cheap wine, or expensive wine drinker
If you had the above information at your finger tips, who would you rather focus your marketing efforts on to get to come back to your restaurant - the family of six that buys budget meals, and drinks beer and soda, or 3 couples ordering starters, high-priced meals, drinking quality wine, and finishing off with expensive liqueurs?
Even recording the value of the tip could be useful. A usually-generous tipper who awards a low tip (possibly to a new waiter) is giving a clear indication of a bad experience. This information could be used by the restaurant owner to contact the customer within a few days to establish what was wrong with the meal or service, and to invite the customer back with an offer of a generous discount for the next meal. Not getting the details of the ’significant other’ and details of any children prevents marketing to special days. Its pretty pointless merely getting the birthday of the cardholder - it’s not that compelling to get an SMS or postcard suggesting that you treat yourself to a special night out. It’s far more effective to receive a prompt to take your significant other out for that special meal. Children’s birthdays are another opportunity to encourage the family to come out to the restaurant for a slap-up meal -but this is only possible if you take the trouble to collect the data…
Hopefully the above points have provided some ideas as to how basic transaction data can be used effectively by an information analyst or direct marketer. If you are approached by a vendor to implement a loyalty scheme, or you are thinking about calling for proposals from scheme suppliers, make sure that you investigate the level of data detail that each supplier collects. If data is recorded at line item level - i.e. product ID, quantity, and price - then you will have a wealth of sales data that you can start using for a variety of campaigns. What Do You Do in the Dark?

By Mike Ford In Ephesians 5:1, Paul urges us to imitate or follow God–not an easy thing to do. It takes many qualities, not the least of which is good character. The dictionary defines character as “the combination of qualities that distinguishes one person, group or thing from another.” It is moral or ethical strength, integrity, fortitude, excellence. It derives from a word meaning “a letter of the alphabet.” An English word not found in the Bible, character comes from a Greek word meaning “to engrave, mark or brand.” A brand designates ownership. If we have the character necessary to follow Christ, in effect, we wear His brand. The most unique definition that I have heard for character is “what you do in the dark.” Dark, as used here, is both literal and figurative. Darkness hides what we do. Most crimes are committed under cover of darkness, and probably more sins occur at night as well. That is its literal meaning. What about its figurative meaning? Satan is often associated with darkness, and conversely, God is linked with light (cf. Acts 26:18). Nothing is hidden from God. Everything we think, do and say should withstand the light of day. In other words, character is a way of life, not a show you put on for others, not a false front. Character is doing the right thing whether or not anyone is there to see it. The Example of Joseph Joseph is a good example of this kind of character. Sold by his brothers into slavery in Egypt, he becomes the property of Potiphar, a high-ranking government official. Despite what Joseph has been through, hated by his brothers, sold into slavery and separated from his father, he maintains his good character. Seeing this, God is with Joseph and allows him to prosper (Genesis 39:2). Instead of sending him to the fields where the labor was hard and the conditions bad, Potiphar assigns him to work in his house. His master notices that all Joseph does prospers, so he makes him his personal servant. Eventually, he puts Joseph in charge of all that he has (verses 3-5). Considering his slavery, Joseph’s life is good–then his character is tested. “Joseph was good-looking and handsome. By-and-by his master’s wife cast her eyes on him: ‘Lie with me,’ she said” (verse 6-7, Moffatt translation throughout). Now here was temptation!
But he refused. He said to his master’s wife, “My master does not trouble himself about anything in the household, but has left everything in my hands, so that my authority is equal to his own; he has kept nothing from me except yourself, for you are his wife. How then can I commit this great crime, and sin against God?” (verses 7-9)
Well-spoken words for a young man in his late teens or perhaps early twenties! Joseph had faced temptation and withstood it. But wait–”Day after day she spoke to Joseph . . .” (verse 10). The seduction of Joseph by this undoubtedly attractive and powerful woman continued. Joseph’s character was strong, though: “. . . but he would not listen to her appeal to lie with her or to be with her” (verse 10). Oh, this woman is clever! She pleaded with Joseph just to sit with her, but he knew what that would lead to! One day when the house was empty (according to first-century Jewish historian, Josephus, the Egyptians were celebrating a pagan festival, but Potiphar’s wife had pleaded sick), she escalated her assault on Joseph’s character. As he was working, “. . . she caught him by the robe, saying, ‘Lie with me.’ But he ran off, leaving the robe in her hands, and got away” (verses 11-12). How many men would be strong enough to withstand this kind of sustained attack on their character? Remember, none of Joseph’s family or friends were around. Who would know if he succumbed? Moral Character Josephus writes:
For when his master’s wife was fallen in love with him, both on account of his beauty of body and his dexterous management of affairs; and supposed that if she should make it known to him, she could easily persuade him to come and lie with her, and that he would look upon it as a piece of happy fortune that his mistress should entreat him, as regarding that state of slavery he was in, and not his moral character, which continued after his condition was changed…(The Antiquities of the Jews, 2.4.2)
Though a slave, his “moral character” remained intact. “How can I commit this great crime and sin against God?” he asked (verse 9). Who knows how long Potiphar’s wife kept this up? Weeks, perhaps months. Undoubtedly, Joseph prayed, meditated and fasted about this problem. He knew that to deny this woman was to face her wrath, yet he never wavered. As a result, Potiphar’s wife had him thrown in jail on false charges. By not giving in to sin, he found himself behind bars! Yet God continued to bless him even in prison, and he ultimately ruled Egypt. Joseph had made a courageous decision. But he had the character to do so because he had made right decisions in the past. Character does not just happen, but is built over time by making a series of courageous, right decisions. In his letter to Rome, Paul reminds us:
It is far on in the night, the day is almost here; so let us drop the deeds of darkness and put on the armour of the light; let us live decorously as in the open light of day–no revelry, or bouts of drinking, no debauchery or sensuality, no quarreling or jealousy. No, put on the character of the Lord Jesus Christ, and never think how to gratify the cravings of the flesh. (Romans 13:12-14)

A Bit of Pollyanna

By Nan S. Russell “Stop being such a Pollyanna,” a trusted, more experienced colleague counseled as we took the long route back to my office. He had just witnessed my project idea annihilated as co-workers eagerly argued why my idea wouldn’t work, where it was flawed and why it shouldn’t be funded. Despite naysayers in the room that day, I believed it was worth pursuing. Ultimately, it did receive funding and became, in time, a successful endeavor. A bit of Pollyannaism got me though. Everyday, in meetings just like this one, ideas are gutted before they’re allowed to evolve. It’s becoming a workplace ritual to poke pinholes in the balloon of an idea until enough air leaks out to drop it to the ground. We look first for the reasons why something can’t be done; why it won’t work; why it’s too difficult; why it’s a bad idea. We’ve become so good at burning idea bridges that might lead to new business, new procedures, or new products that we don’t even have to try to build the bridges first. But, people who are winning at working take a different approach. They pump air into idea-balloons by offering suggestions, brainstorming possibilities and encouraging input. They point out problems by offering solutions that make the idea more viable. They’re curious and intrigued, looking at how one idea might fit with another, or weaving two small ideas into one bigger one. Instead of asking why should we do this, they’re encouraging people to give it a try. Understanding the fragile nature of emerging ideas, they help protect, nurture and green-house ideas (their own and others) until they have a chance to take root. They get excited about new possibilities. Often it’s their optimism, vision, and positive approach that waters the seed until it grows and blooms. They have a bit of Pollyanna in them. But they probably won’t call it that. You see, Pollyanna’s gotten a bad rap in business circles as nave and unrealistic. I think it’s time to look at Pollyanna differently. You will find more work success embracing ideas, seeing the positive side, and stretching your horizons than finding reasons not to. Impossible is often more a state of mind than a reality. As Helen Keller reminds us, “No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars … or sailed to an uncharted land … or opened a new heaven to the human spirit.” But I’ve also learned in twenty years in management there’s more to winning at working than positive thinking and optimistic approaches. A bit of Pollyanna should be mixed with strong doses of common sense. Or, as British political leader Harold Wilson puts it, “I am an optimist, but I’m an optimist who carries a raincoat.” Still, I know if I had listened to everyone who deflated my idea-balloons, I wouldn’t have the life opportunities I have now.
